Hmong 101 (Online Class)

The Hmong Cultural Center is excited to offer an engaging multicultural education presentation designed to provide valuable insight into Hmong history, culture, and the community’s contributions to the United States.

This class will explore a range of topics that build a deeper understanding of the Hmong community, including an overview of Hmong history and the refugee experience that led to migration to the United States. Participants will also learn about key demographic trends and the diversity within the Hmong population. In addition, the course introduces foundational aspects of Hmong culture such as clans, religion, and health beliefs, along with basic language and greetings and practical cultural etiquette for effective engagement.


Registration for all class sessions closes 3 days before the start date.

Late Registration: If you miss the deadline but are still interested, you can contact the Community Ed office by emailing us at CommunityEd@isd623.org or calling: 651-604-3770. Space may be limited, but we'll try our best to accommodate late registrations.


Refund Policy

If you need to cancel your registration, in order to receive a refund, you must notify Roseville Area Schools Community Education at least one (1) week prior to start date of the class/event/camp/activity, and that I will be issued a refund minus a $5 service charge. Registrations are not refunded in the event of a weather cancellation.

Hmong Cultural Center

Instructor

Txongpao Lee has served as Executive Director of the Hmong Cultural Center since 2002, bringing decades of leadership and community engagement to his work. After arriving in Minnesota as a refugee in 1984, he has remained deeply connected to the Twin Cities’ Hmong community. He is a respected Mej Koob (Hmong marriage ritualist) and an active leader in the Lee Clan Association of Minnesota. In recognition of his impact, Txongpao was honored with a 2022 Facing Race Award from the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation.

Dr. Mark E. Pfeifer has served as Director of Programs at the Hmong Cultural Center since 2000 and manages its museum. He holds a doctorate in geography and advanced degrees in urban studies and library science. Dr. Pfeifer is also a lecturer in anthropology and longtime editor of the peer-reviewed Hmong Studies Journal. He has authored and co-edited several scholarly works focused on Hmong history, culture, and the Hmong American experience.
