Seed Mosaics: A Great Minnesotan TraditionArtEvery year, the Minnesota State Fair showcases seed mosaics created by artists from across the state. In this beginner-level workshop, participants will learn the history and foundational techniques of seed mosaic art while creating their own design. This class provides the basic skills and confidence needed to continue creating more intricate designs on your own. Alcohol Ink - Sugar Plum TreeArtHave you ever wanted to try your hand at Abstract Art that is fun and Colorful? Alcohol Ink (AI) is a new painting technique that just screams ABSTRACT. With so many different techniques, AI will soon become a favorite medium. To make your Sugar Plum Tree, you will first create the background by blowing the Alcohol ink with a hand blower and Isopropyl Alcohol. Then you will create the vase with dripping the AI and spreading with dental tools. Next, you can drop various inks in any color to create your flowers. The last step is to highlight your flowers with doodles. Remember this is the fun part – explore your creativity. Your instructor will help guide you through each step. You will make one 8” x 10” painting in your chosen colors. Given time, you can create a 2nd painting. Just come to have fun and enjoy yourself. Best part of using Alcohol Ink is if you don’t like a part of your picture, you can wipe it off with ISO alcohol. A $15 supply fee is payable directly to the instructor on the night of class. Alcohol Ink - Hearts and DoodlesArtDo you have a special Valentine? Make them their custom heart using Alcohol Inks and doodles. You will first create the heart using various colors of Alcohol Ink. Don’t worry, the heart does not have to be perfect, it will continue to take on its own personality when you cover it with doodles. Let your imagination go wild. Introduction to GlassblowingArtThis class is great for beginners without any experience! The students will learn safety fundamentals, tool and torch usage, solid rod welding and gathering, color application, shaping, and more. Students can potentially create things such as small sculptural items, marbles, paper weights, plant rods, or anything else that can be thought of with the skills learned. Let your creativity guide you! Attire Requirements: No sandals or open footwear – shoes must be fully enclosed from toe to heel No loose sleeves and long dangling necklaces/bracelets Tops and/or sweaters must be zipped, buttoned, or closed while around the working area Long hair must be tied back Please come to class fed and hydrated – standing is required for the duration of the class for optimal safety. Watercolor Painting: IntermediateArtIf you have some experience with watercolor, join this class to develop your skills. (Please note that this is not a beginner class. Look for my beginning classes in this catalog) Some skills you should have before taking this class are knowing the wetness and dryness of the media, how to mix basic colors, and understanding basic perspective principals. You will learn techniques, see demonstrations, receive guided instruction, and participate in one-on-one critiques. Expect to work on a variety of topics completing, at least, three paintings. Materials Needed: Sheets, Pad, or Block of 140 lb 11x15 watercolor paper (this can be Arches or other quality cold press paper that has a solid tooth; avoid Strathmore - Canson paper) Board to put them on 1 or more multi-compartment palettes or trays 1 roll of better-quality paper towels 1 #2 pencil 1 ivory eraser (Staedtler Mars Plastic) 1 roll of masking tape 1 bottle mask-off (masking fluid) any color 1 lightweight pair of scissors 1 ruler at least 18 inches long Tracing paper A cup for water Optional: a small misting bottle (an old hairspray bottle works well) Watercolor Paints: Assuming you have a palette of paints, you may not need to purchase more. Watercolor Painting: Beginner IArtExplore the wonder of watercolor painting by learning fundamentals and techniques of this exciting medium. This course is intended for the novice to beginner; you do not need prior experience to enroll in this class. There will be a set curriculum to help you understand and feel comfortable as you discover your artistic journey using watercolors. This 5 session course will begin with a few painting exercises and finish with two completed paintings. Supply list can be found here. Course Objective: Plan to experiment and explore the traditional water color painting techniques – In this case we will be studying the personality of watercolor. What makes the watercolor do what it wants to do? This class is for the first time painter or someone who has tried watercolor before but would like to get a better understanding of how it works. Our goal is to have at least one excellent painting by the end of the session. Plan to have group critiques and discussions throughout the session. Wooden FeatherArtDiscover the art of creating a personalized 32” wooden feather in this guided workshop, perfect for both beginners and seasoned crafters. Watercolor Painting: Beginner IIArtThis class is an extension of Beginning Watercolor I. In this class you will continue with beginning watercolor exercises that were learned in the Beginning I class. You can expect to complete 3-4 paintings. Sewing: Beginning ApparelArtBuild on your sewing skills and learn how to read and use a pattern to create a garment of your choice in class. Classes consist of group instruction and demonstrations to further explore terms, techniques, and materials as well as time to work on your own project with instructor guidance. In this class, you’ll learn how to create an abstract sunflower by layering inks for the center, shaping petals with a hand rubber blower, and adding depth with colorful highlights. Your instructor will guide you step by step as you make a 5” x 7” painting in your choice of colors. If time allows, you can create a second piece on either a white or black background. Alcohol ink is wonderfully forgiving—if you don’t love a section, simply wipe it away with isopropyl alcohol and try again. Come ready to explore, have fun, and take home a unique sunflower creation! No knitting or sewing required, learn the magic of wet feltmaking and create a work of art for your table or wall. Inspired by vintage penny rugs and the Russian artist Kandinsky, this design looks great in any home, office or cabin. Some physical stamina needed for felting classes. $35 supply fee, payable to instructor, includes all fibers and supplies - cash or check only!
